Ann Kenyon is the widow of an RAF National Service veteran who sadly passed away several years ago. Before joining the veterans’ community at Fleetwood Town Community Trust, Ann’s days were marked by loneliness and a lack of purpose. Although she occasionally visited her local church to meet friends, her mental health and overall wellbeing were suffering, and her social life was limited.
Since becoming part of the veterans’ group at the Trust, Ann’s life has transformed. She describes the experience as “an absolute godsend,” saying, “I’ve made so many new friends and my life has completely turned around. I’m busy every day—there’s always something to do, whether it’s working in the veterans’ garden, joining walk-and-talk sessions, attending coffee mornings, or simply having someone to talk to.”
Ann has built strong friendships within the group and thrives on the social interaction. She’s an active volunteer in the veterans’ community garden, contributing through painting, mowing the lawn, and helping it flourish. The walk-and-talk sessions have encouraged her to walk further than many others in the group, all while enjoying meaningful conversations and beautiful scenery.
One of Ann’s favourite aspects of the group is the variety of trips and events. She’s visited places like Liverpool, Howarth, and enjoyed canal excursions, festive balls, and more. Remarkably, at the age of 82, Ann recently participated in a 24-hour spinathon, cycling for two hours—a testament to her energy and determination.
She deeply values the camaraderie within the group, which has become a cornerstone of her renewed wellbeing.
Tony Codling, our Armed Forces Coordinator shared, “Having Ann as part of the group is a powerful example of how our community supports the health and wellbeing of all its members—whether they are serving personnel, veterans, or family members. Thanks to the Armed Forces Covenant grant, we’re able to help those facing social isolation due to bereavement and offer them a future filled with friendship and purpose.”
Ann continues to look forward to each meeting and takes pride in how her contributions have helped the veterans’ garden thrive.
