On 28 April our over 50’s squad made the journey to the FA headquarters, St Georges Park in Burton-upon-Trent for the finals of the prestigious FA Peoples Cup where they would face the other 5 remaining teams from over 200 that started out in the competition in February.
With the 1st round being a round robin tournament with the top 4 teams securing a place in the semi-finals it soon became apparent that the standard of football would be very high and the referees very strict but the Flyers got off to a good start with a 1-0 win over Wiltshire WFC
With the remaining matches proving very tight the Flyers eventually secured their place in the semi-finals with a game to spare.
In the semi-final the Flyers faced a stiff challenge against Midlands team, Pele’s Pearls with the game ending 0-0 it went to penalties for a place in the finals with the Flyers securing a 2-0 victory.
And so it came down to the final against the winners of the other semi-final, Beccles Town FC. The match was very tight and balanced with few clear chances for either side to break the deadlock. On the final whistle the score remained 0-0 and so the Champions would be decided with a penalty shootout!
Beccles won the toss and elected to kick first, top quality penalties followed from both sides and a tense shootout resulted in the Flyers eventually winning 5-4 to be crowned National Champions in the biggest and most prestigious walking football competition in the UK, The FA Peoples Cup.
