Fleetwood Town Community Trust have been supporting Myerscough College students on National Citizens Service (NCS)

The Trust has worked with over 30 students in Foundation Learning, with all students developing crucial social, vocational and employability skills as they prepare for the next steps in their journey to enhanced courses or employment post Further Education.
The initiative delivered at Myerscough College has seen students work within the course bubbles take on new challenges, working both independently and in teams. Activities included Archery, Graffiti, Bushcraft and Survival skills, Healthy Eating & Nutrition, The Trust’s very own Enterprise Challenge and much more, with students excelling in each area. The initiative aims to empower young people within their social settings feeling a valued member of their community through designing and implementing Social Action Projects. Students planned presentations and posters to raise awareness of the variety of learning difficulties and disabilities they each have. These ranged from Autism, ADHD, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Head of Foundation Learning, Barry Sherriff said, “”Given the circumstances that have surrounded us for the past 18 months the opportunity to participate in the NCS programme has been a ‘ray of hope’ for all our Foundation SEND Learners, most of whom have EHCP’s and HNF meaning they have faced considerable time in self isolation due to being ‘Clinically Extremely Vulnerable’. Working with John and Callum we have managed to protect our ‘course’ bubbles while providing the students with the welcome and much needed opportunity to participate in a series of exciting activities that they have absolutely loved! The staff have been absolutely brilliant, and it has given us a very positive end to what has been a most challenging year. Thank you so much for your incredible dedication to supporting the needs of our fantastic students.”
NCS Programme Manager, John Hartley added, “The students in Foundation Learning have been a pleasure to work with. Seeing each of them develop over a short period of time, trying new activities and being challenged outside is everything NCS is about and I’m so glad that they have been able to celebrate in this way at the end of their academic year at College.”
