Fleetwood Town Community Trust Festival of Sport
Saturday saw Fleetwood Town’s Community Trust host their first Festival of Sport event at Fleetwood Town Rugby club, with over 750 people attending to take part in the physical activity on show.
One of the main objectives for the day was to raise awareness among the local community of the sporting activities available for anybody, no matter your age, gender or ability delivered by many sporting organisations. This was a success on our behalf of the Community Trust and there are so many thank-yous we need to make.
Activities were showcased throughout the day from Musoko Karate, Wyre Netball, Fleetwood Flyers, O2 Touch Rugby, FY Wingz and Fleetwood Town Community Trust. The event saw over 750 people attend, many of whom joined in with the different sporting spectacles, and a majority in sports that they have never tried before, which was fantastic to see.
As midday struck, Fleetwood Town Community Trust then played a charity football match against a Once Upon a Smile (OUAS) All Star’s, which was kicked off by Fleetwood Town Councillor, Terry Rogers.
The OUAS team consisted of Emmerdale actor Danny Miller, Ben Ryan Davies, Daniel Jillings, Jay Kontzle and many others. It was an entertaining match, to say the least with it ended in a 10-2 victory for the Fleetwood Town Community Trust.
A lot of money was raised for the Once upon a Smile charity, and to all those who donated, we’d like to say a huge thank you to all for coming down and making the event one to remember.
Once Upon a Smile co-founder, Danny Miller said, “Our celebrity team plays regular fixtures against clubs across the United Kingdom in order to raise money for Once Upon a Smile.
“The money raised helps in supporting families following the death of a loved one. A huge thank you to Fleetwood Town Community Trust in raising the money they did today. It will go a very long way and the charity really appreciate their hard work.”
John Hartley, Fleetwood Town Community Trusts, Community Sports Development Officer explained, “Today’s event has been a huge success; firstly with many of the Fleetwood’s community attending and taking part in the day’s activities with sporting organisations working together in partnership.
“Secondly the link with child bereavement charity, Once Upon a Smile has demonstrated how charities can work together to raise awareness and money for each cause.
“The event was fantastically supported and it is humbling to see so many people turn up and show their support.”
Fleetwood Town Councillor, Terry Rogers spoke after the event and was impressed with the numbers involved, and with how many people engaged in the sports activities.
He said: “The Trust has put on a fantastic event and it’s one that I hope we see put together more often for those in the community.
“It has shown off the wonderful sporting organisations in the local area, and it was fantastic to see so many people get involved in physical activity.
The Trust would like to thank Fleetwood Rugby Club for allowing the event to go ahead, and a huge thank you to all the local sports teams who came down for the day to spread awareness of their sports.
