Fleetwood Town Community Trust has been awarded a grant of £6,000 from Sport England which will facilitate a series of programmes aimed at reducing inequalities, and helping those most affected by the impact of coronavirus.

In conjunction with Wyre Borough Council, Regenda Homes and West View Community Centre, the Community Trust will encourage socialisation and break down the barriers to activity caused by the recent pandemic through a range of fun and engaging programmes.

The programmes will target families and adults, primarily those in sheltered accommodation and people with long-term health conditions, and will incorporate the beautiful coast and countryside across the Wyre region.

Activities will include health walks, cycling, couch to 5k, family bootcamp, glow sports, clubbercise, chair-based exercises, yoga, pilates, and more. There will be an emphasis on social activity and talking – all at a safe distance, which will help improve mental health as well as physical health. Sometimes, just meeting up, and having a brew and a chat, will help build people’s confidence in taking part in physical activity.

Matt Hilton, Chief Executive of the Community Trust, said:

“We’re delighted to have been awarded this grant from Sport England as it will allow us to make a difference to the members of our communities who have been affected the most by the recent pandemic.

“We’re going to be using local outdoor parks and open spaces in order to maximise the use of the natural environment, which will encourage individuals to spend time outdoors in a safe place.

“As well as increasing levels of physical activity and social interaction, we hope these programmes will help local families and adults understand the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle, which we hope will in turn improve their self-esteem and self-worth.”

Consultation has also taken place with Healthier Fleetwood who bring together residents, health and care providers, emergency services, charities and voluntary groups, sports and community-based projects and local businesses to make a real difference to people’s lives.
